Foundations in Public Participation – The International Association for Public Participation (IAP2)

Public involvement and community engagement are constantly evolving. IAP2’s highly respected training program remains laser focused on what you need to know to design and deliver effective programs in the challenging times.

Both new and experienced community engagement practitioners will benefit from the skills, proven techniques, and knowledge that you’ll learn in this highly interactive training program.

Foundations in Public Participation will prepare you to hit the ground running, armed with the knowledge and confidence you need to plan and execute effective community engagement. The program is divided into two modules, Planning and Techniques, for effective public participation. Upon completion of both modules, you will receive a certificate from IAP2.

Designed by successful practitioners who engage diverse populations on controversial topics around the world, this comprehensive program is grounded in what you, your peers, and your mentors have told us about your training needs.

Completely revamped in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, TPC is pleased to announce that we are ready to offer the International Association for Public Participation’s flagship Foundations Program ONLINE.  Module One introduces a proven method for planning effective public participation and Module Two equips students with 40+ diverse methods for accomplishing engagement objectives.  Both courses are delivered in half-day sessions full of interactive exercises and opportunities to get to work with your fellow students virtually.  Class size, as always, is limited to 20 students to provide the maximum opportunity to learn.

Module 1: Planning for Effective Public Participation (Five- 4 Hour Sessions)

NOTE: This course is a prerequisite for the subsequent module, Techniques for Effective Public Participation.

One major reason that community engagement initiatives fail relates to inadequate planning and preparation. This module provides you with proven strategies for planning to engage the public that will greatly increase your odds of success. This course introduces foundational concepts and provides ample opportunity to work through realistic case studies to help you prepare to your own public outreach and engagement efforts effectively.  Module One covers:

  • Understanding the context of engagement and what motivates people to participate
  • Identifying decision-making processes and appropriate opportunities for engaging the public
  • Selecting an appropriate level of public participation and establishing clear and achievable objectives
  • Developing a detailed public participation plan and integrating communication strategies to ensure success
  • Identifying evaluation tools to assess program effectiveness.
Module 2: Techniques for Effective Public Participation (Four- 4 Hour Sessions)

NOTE: This course requires completion of Module 1: Planning for Effective Public Participation.

Once you have learned the basics about how to plan for effective public participation, you’ll be ready for introduction to 40+ techniques for accomplishing diverse objectives. Instruction, small group exercises, videos, case studies, and demonstrations will introduce techniques you’ll be ready to deploy on your next project.  Module Two introduces three categories of techniques:

  • Techniques for raising awareness and informing the public – which are essential for supporting the engagement of under-represented members of society
  • Techniques for collecting public input and understanding what the public is trying to communicate
  • Techniques for bringing people together that remain essential, even in these uncertain times.

In addition, Module Two explores how to use on-line engagement to expand your reach and provide more opportunity for including all voices.
