I’m ok remembering three (3) things when I go to the grocery store, but if the list blooms into four or more items, I better write it down. And no, it’s not age (and yes, I do have clothes old enough to vote) and I’m not alone. The rule of three, which has been around forever, basically holds that people can best remember lists and patterns of three. There’s a rhythm, a tempo, a cadence that works in our brains – location, location, location; life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness; stop, look and listen. That rhythm works well for jokes, too. One of my faves from Jon Stewart: “I celebrated Thanksgiving in an old-fashioned way. I invited everyone in my neighborhood to my house, we had an enormous feast, and then I killed them and took their land.” Threes just resonate better.
