People find it quite impossible to relate to faceless, sterile institutions. I have yet to meet anyone who gets all warm and tingly around the U.S. Department of Treasury’s Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC). The challenge remains that those sterile public institutions are all in the business of ultimately serving the public. Most people have little knowledge or understanding about how the public sausage is made in those places, but still the institutions require people to accept what comes out of the grinder. People who work with and in municipalities, which are closest to the publics that they serve, have the greatest advantage in developing relationships with their constituents.
